The Deerfield River Fly Fishing Report for 10/8/2020: I had a client email me about my lack of updates over the last three weeks and it was a combination of two things: an extremely busy schedule and unpredictable fishing. Things have turned around in a big way over the last week on both the Deerfield and the Swift River with daily catches in the double digits, thanks in part to the fall stocking by MA Fish and Game- new recruits seem to get the resident fish fired up and everyone had their happy camper faces on this week with solid action on rainbows and browns. Best day was a solid 21 fish outing by Gary P, who was so content we actually stopped at the 21st fish! This great fishing will continue right through into December- Deerfield browns will start spawning around the last week of October in earnest and the rainbows go absolutely nutty for egg patterns from November into December. I will be offering some trips to the Great Lakes tribs for Steelhead and monster Browns in November and early December too if anyone has interest- shoot me an email for more information.Hatches: There’s been a nice BWO hatch starting around noon on the mainstem and lower DF as well as the Swift so be on the lookout for some dry fly action-20-22# on the DF and 26# to 28# on the Swift. Small tan caddis (18-20) are around too and a smattering of October caddis too. Get in on it while it lasts! Get your streamer arsenal out as the next three weeks will be the time to connect with a hungry pre-spawn brown. Hope everyone is safe and healthy in these crazy times- I’m still following strict Covid protocols and thus far it’s been a Covid free season for me and my clients- let’s keep this going in that direction! Tight Lines everyone!
