The Deerfield River Fly Fishing Report for 11/15/2020: Fishing over the last three weeks has been outstanding on the Deerfield- most of the catch has been predominantly rainbows- however some nice chunky browns up to 20 inches have been in the mix. The browns are spawning like crazy now and their redds are easy to spot- you’ll see areas of lighter, “cleaner” gravel. Please avoid stepping in these areas as you’ll crush the eggs that are buried there under the gravel- if you see brown trout actively spawning or protecting a redd please leave them alone! If you are with a guide that is targeting these spawners please reconsider what you are doing and who you are spending the day with. Usually just downstream of these redds will be hoards of hungry rainbows looking to chow on drifting eggs and nymphs- this is the game you should be playing right now, not doing the white trash fly fishing and harrasing spawners for social media posts. There is still dry fly action to be had from 1;30 to 3;30 on warmer afternoons if you enjoy the midge game- black and yellow midges in the #24-26 range are still hatching and there are pods of fish rising to them- it’s a tough game but can produce if you have the patience and eye sight to track your fly. The great fishing will likely last into December unless the bitter cold arrives early- days in the forties will produce big numbers for those who have the right gear for the elements- dress appropriately and you can enjoy the great fishing in relative solitude. I wanted to thank everyone who has come out and fished with me this year- it’s been crazy to say the least but we have operated Covid free all season and that is in large part to everyone using common sense and following the protocols- let’s keep this streak going! As a reminder I am not providing food or beverages on our guided fly fishing trips- this is one of my decisions to limit exposure on our outings and this will continue indefinitely. Please bring food, snacks and beverages on our guided fly fishing trips and please be sure to have a Buff style mask when social distancing cant be practiced. I have open dates going forward so give me a shout if you want some fresh air and double digit action on trout!
